On the 17th of February La Rosa Dance theatre celebrated its 20th anniversary by putting on a production called Viaje Flamenco. As I’ve already been accused of being a liker of things I happily went along, mostly in the hopes of learning a bit of culture but also on the off chance that I’d bump into some hotties like that flamenco dancer Naomi Campbell was seeing a while back.
Viaje Flamenco means flamenco journey so the production explained the roots of the sultry Spanish dance by tracing its origins and influences. They were as varied as North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. For the portion representing India the flamenco dancers were joined onstage by traditional Indian dancers who told traditional stories of Shiva and Ganesh.
After a brief interlude we returned to the theatre to watch the “pure “flamenco pieces. What a treat! The haunting music from the live band onstage, the choreography, the gorgeous costumes, *sigh*. By the time the ladies with the swirling dresses and the flowers in their hair stomped onstage with their castanets I nearly swooned!
All too soon the show was over and the performers were taking a bow to a standing ovation. I didn’t meet the guy who swept me off my feet but was we sipped on the champagne so thoughtfully provided after the show my homegirl and I agreed that it had been a great night all around. I went to bed hearing drumbeats and clicking heels. Shout out to Allison from Diva PR for the invite!
