Neo Ntlatleng is a Dube born actor who’s in love with the arts. He has already starred major drama series, 83 Parliament Street , Zone 14 and Soul City. The young man who has also directed a short film and a few music videos amongst other things is also an entrepreneur. I caught up with him in Rosebank on a Saturday for the “People you should know” feature. Here is how it went:
Tha Hustler: Where did the whole acting thing begin considering that you studied to be a Director and a Writer at Afda?
Neo Ntlatleng: Well , I studied theatre while I was at NSA (National School of the Arts), so that’s where the acting started and while I was at AFDA I acted as part of my marks so when the opportunity came, I took it as part of the hustle and making a living.
TH: What have you been up to besides acting and what are your plans for the near future?
NN: I’ve directed a few music videos but I’m currently focusing on the business that I’ve started with a few friends called “The What Box” so I’m now an entrepreneur. For now that’s where my focus lies, I have a couple of acting gigs including the new season of Zone 14 and I’m hoping to focus on writing from next year.
TH: What services does your business offer and why that route?
NN: Well we do corporate branding, from graphic design, website development, corporate strategy and corporate branding. I have a neck for branding and developing brands. That is my strength and contribution in the company as an Account Executive.
TH: Do you believe that there is enough support from government when it comes to the arts?
NN: I can’t say that they are not doing anything. When it comes to theatre plays I don’t see their role but most certainly when it comes to films, they have certainly contributed towards the industry, I mean they subsidised my fees at school as part of talent development. Also, there is only so much they can do, it’s also up to the individuals to push their passion.
TH: What do you think is lacking at the SAFTA’s
NN: I think the SAFTA’s need to follow in the footsteps of the SAMA’s, I think the SAMA’s are amazing. Perhaps they should get a corporate sponsor. The sooner we create a star factor in our industry, the better for everyone, including glamorizing the SAFTA’s.
TH: Any SAFTA nominations? What do you regard as your biggest achievement thus far?
NN: No, I have never been up for a nomination, the last awards I won were at school. Definitely starting our branding company.
TH: What’s the last SA produced film you watched?
NN: Jozi, I thought it was really funny.
TH: Most embarrassing moment on set or in public?
NN: I can’t think of one hey...I don’t get embarrassed easily.
TH: What kind of roles do you prefer? “The Villain” or a “The Good Guy”?
NN: I prefer the one that has more depth and I think most “villain” characters are like that, They are more meaty. Either way as long as the character has internal conflict within themselves. If it’s a good guy I’m playing he must have problems that he faces and overcomes. Something to take me on an emotional journey...
TH: How do you feel about fame and would you use your fame to get more business?
NN: At first it was very strange but because it came with the job I became very nonchalant about it. I understand that people become attached to people on TV but I don’t let it go into my head. For business maybe but if it was my choice, I wouldn’t be famous, I’d rather be just a basic guy doing with his thing in business.
TH: Who inspires you?
NN: I’m inspired by the general movement of people in Africa that are all about re branding Africa and changing the world's perspective on our continent. As well as young people in business that are making it. Our leaders in our country with the vision they had for us, because South Africa is very unique and anyone who’s innovative in general.
TH: Which actress would you like to have a kissing scene with or work with?
NN: mmh! Any actresses in the world? Eh...anyone who can act? Or just someone who’s hot? *pauses* there are so many...I can’t think of one. But in SA I would like to work with Brenda Ngxoli 'cause she’s talented.
TH: How important is it for an actor to alter a look for a role, would you do such?
NN: I’m all for it. I think it’s very important to change yourself to look the part.
TH: Advice to up and coming actors?
NN: I would say things are achievable to a great extend. They are not easy but if you work towards your goal or dream you can certainly achieve it. There's always someone who can help you get where you want to go, so I would advise them to listen and to learn from people that have done it.
TH: What do you think of homosexual characters on our screens, would you play one?
NN: Well, if it’s a reflection of what is happening in our lives and the script is relevant, then yes. Some productions use it as a gimmick to shock people but I think it should be educational more than anything.
TH: What’s your favourite Beyonce song?
NN: The one she had with JayZ...eh? probably “Upgrade you”
