Air waves news

The Y -Academy has always strived to groom and introduce radio personalities. Looking at the radio industry, YFM has revealed top DJ’s with names like DJ Fresh and Bad boy T who all hail from Y back in the days. The culture has continued with now Midday show host DJ Warras rocking the listeners from the same academy that introduced Bujy and MaAda.

Pop the hood to see some of the new faces on Yfm:

The current crop of the cadets look alright however it remains to be seen whether they sound alright let alone have what it takes. They have been on air between 4 and 5pm for the last 2 weeks and from the various shows I have listened to, radio sounds like a nerve wrecking job. Part of their training includes reading news, sports, producing the show and being behind the mic. While that slot might have a small audience listening to the radio during that time, I think it’s a great initiative to allow the guys to get used to speaking behind the mic while providing thumping beats at the crack of dawn. I just found out, exclusively, that only 3 cadets managed to secure a slot on Ground Zero after 2 rounds of on-air presentation by all the academics. DJ Sabby, Mims and Subz will be holding it down between 4 and 5am from the 3rd of August.

Still with radio, it finally came to pass. DJ Sbu has made his entrance to nationwide radio. The former YFM Breakfast show host has been off the airwaves since his contract with youth radio station was not renewed in April this year. He was rumoured to be joining Metro FM then and I predicted that it would happen only in July. Although we all thought he was taking over from the Mafutha Jams man whom's jams appear to have been on bio slim since rejoining Metro, this is not the case, infact Sbu has taken over the 3 to 6pm slot on Saturdays. I tried to listen to Sbu this past weekend who yapped about talking to 5 million people across the country, needless to say, his voice didn't sound so charming. I bet people in the rural areas must have changed their Eveready Power Plus batteries 3 times and shifted their aerials for an hour before realising that it’s actually the DJ’s voice that’s fading. I wish him good luck with this new opportunity. He has got what it takes to rock the airwaves. He’s pitted against legendary DJ Oskido on Y at a similar time slot and of course the PSL and English Premiership once the soccer season begins. In other radio news, radio prank master Darren Whackhead Simpson has taken over the Highveld breakfast show from Jeremy Mansfield. This came as a bit of a surprise for me with Whackhead nailing the job but he’s no stranger to the show as he has worked for years with his predecessor. He will still keep the Rude Awakening team . Catch Darren between 6 and 9 am weekdays on 94.7 Highveld Stereo.
