Halle Berry is in South Africa shooting her movie, Dark Tide. She plays a diving instructor who, after a dramatic near death experience, goes back to the water. Berry is shooting in False Bay, Cape Town. There is a bit of dramz with the shooting as shark conservationists say that movies such as Dark Tide cast sharks in a bad light, which goes against their aim, which is to change negative human perceptions about sharks. "After reading the script we decided it was not something we would like to put our names to," said Alison Kock, a Save Our Seas Foundation shark conservationist said "Our mandate is to try to change people’s perceptions of sharks. The first script that we got sounded very much like it had a thriller aspect to it and a personal kind of aspect to it as well. But fighting off a shark, or surviving a shark attack - we couldn’t see the positive side of that, as much as we tried".
Sir Ian McKellen (aka Gandalf in the Lord of the Ring) is in Cape Town, performing in 'Waiting for Godot'. The play by Samuel Beckett centres around two men who wait, unsuccessfully for a man named Godot to arrive. The play deals with themes such as life, consciousness, existence and choices. The play, with an international cast will be shown in Khayelitsha because the director, Sean Mathias wanted to show the play to people in the township who may not have had the opportunity to see a piece of theatre. “We want to bring our production to the people of Khayelitsha in a venue that is accessible and at a price everyone can afford, and in this way properly honour the notion of ‘touring’,” he said. The Fugard Theatre team, with the help of sponsors R&N Master Builders, will have only 24 hours to transform the O.R. Tambo Sports Centre, recently one of the FIFA Fan Parks, into a theatre space to seat 800 and suitable to house this world-renowned production. Full story here:
