The Oxford on Oxford Rd is fast becoming the place to be in Jozi. I went to quench my thirst at the launch of the Tropika Island of Treasure 3 and boy did I enjoy it. I kind of expected a beach theme so I was tempted to come dressed in my slops and shorts hoping to see some ladies bikinis, especially Khanyi Mbau, but to my disappointment this was just not the case. Khanyi was nowhere to be found and neither was another celebrity in this competition.
Comedian Loyiso Gola who was said to be out of the country. Nonetheless the other celebs represented. Dionne Song , JR, pop/rock singer Snotkop formely known as Lekgowa, the late coming former Miss South Africa Tatum Keshwar and “Live” presenter Bonang Matheba.
Snotkop:

Hate her or love her, I think Bonang has a bubbly character, the same way some people love champagne and others don’t. Despite her stories, rumours or scandals, I like her...She brightens up a room when she’s around.
The unfortunate thing about being on time is that you get to a place and there is no one that looks familiar, so standing at the bar becomes the next best option which tends to create the wrong impression if you know what I mean. The open bar allowed me to save my Jucy allowance and order the heavy weight drinks with DJ Euphonik playing some tracks that reminded me of the days of my youth:

It wasn’t long before the regular faces popped in, one normally tends to form an impression when a room is full of older white people and UJ Observer journos, LOL. Proceedings began with Jenerik Soulz performing their new track as part of their set. I was quite surprised at the number of claps they received, considering that there were people chapping away and ordering drinks during the performance. I take it Dionne didn’t have a chance to sip her favourite whiskey as she sang beautifully, hitting some heart touching notes. The Stage got a bit of attention when JR came on, the Tequila song definitely made an impact on me. Here he is with Speedy and Stoan:

Neo De Jenero and Dionne Song with comedian David Kelly:

Speeches are never a good thing especially at an open bar event. So my advice, with that welcome drink, start the speeches, you are most likely to get the message across. The Tropika Brand Manager Asheen Dayal (Yes I remembered his name, some of us are focused) got on stage and did his thing. All I heard was that this year, there will be 14 contestants and there will be no sharing of the 1 million prize. Snotkop (stage name? really?) came on stage and got the crowd going again, yes that would be the older white crowd I mentioned early. You should have seen the smiles on their faces. The first track he performed is still in my head, catchy stuff I tell you. I am excited about this year’s Treasure challenge, they have interesting celebs and they will be heading to Thailand, an Island called Phuket... plus I could use a holiday. For those of y’all that want to become famous on another reality show, go here to enter and become one of the other 7 contestants, otherwise be sure to catch the 8 episodes series on ETV. The competition closes on the 31st of October 2010.
Peace!
