Late Night With Loyiso Gola

Late Night news with Loyisa Gola debuted on E TV last night at 21h30. The show's press release promised that the eleven episode show would focus on current affairs and political issues in South Africa. The show was billed as one that would present news in a formal way as a normal news show is. Field reporters on the show would include Riaad Moosa and Jason Cope.
Minutes after the show aired, the Twitter community started airing their views on the show. The reaction varied from viewers finding it hilarious to people who seemed unconvinced, to the down right angry and malicious. Being something of an almost hippie who doesn't have a TV I didn't watch the show but was extremely disturbed by the vitriolic, malicious tweets that some people posted.

Someone tweeted Loyiso and said: I write better jokes, you should get fired.
Another twitter compared it to being raped. Going through their stream of vitriol I notice two things: The majority of comments were from people who could not spell, had very few followers and had never produced a television show, or sold out a theatre or hosted an awards show. The comments were not about the content of the show or constructive, they were simply people attacking someones work in a gleeful manner. I was very disgusted at the people who also retweeted the ugly comments with laughs.

Producing a TV show is extremely difficult. Selling a concept to a broadcaster, getting commissioned, getting money for the show and producing it is a very hard, long process. To disrespect someones work, and use disgusting metaphors and to invoke atrocities such as rape to compare to a TV show is beyond childish and malicious.
I don't like to vent on this blog, but really, in twenty ten, get your spelling game up, throw some constructive criticism or just keep quiet. Tjerrr...

  1. You didn't watch the show!! How can you defend something you have not watched? People would only react this way if they felt the show was poor, do you think they all conspired against him, and planned to organize some sort of a twitter coup? If they where entertained like the show was meant to achieve, I'm sure the comments would of praised it. I do not support profanity or ridicule, but South African audience are let down so often by mediocrity that I can understand their frustration.

  2. I have watched many shows, in different perspectives for different people or variety of audience/viewers... and guest what it was just a one revised version of what I've watched before, inspiring certain viewers who happen to enjoy they same formulae of learning.
Having said all of these watchin this Loyiso guy, makes me learn a lot about what real people feel, behave and/or react to certain situations in a very humouring fashion sense. I would watch loyiso gola for 24/7 and still crave for more... this show is poignat and reveals what can not be revealed without sense of humour.. Usanda Mlakalaka
